Three ways to get the best from your new boiler

When you invest in a brand new boiler you can expect it to heat your home efficiently for several years. While a manufacturer’s warranty can give you peace of mind that your boiler will be protected should anything go wrong, there are a few additional things you can do to prolong the life of your new boiler and maximise its capabilities.

  • Install thermostatic radiator valves

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) enable you to control the heat of individual radiators and can save you from wasting energy in the parts of your home that aren’t being used. For example, you can set your bedroom radiators to a lower setting than the radiators in your main living areas.

You can adjust the temperature to your preference through a series of settings from 1 (the coolest at around 10°C), to 5 (the hottest at around 23°C). You can also switch thermostatic radiator valves off using the * setting, which will stop the radiator from heating up, but allow just enough warmth to ensure the pipes can’t freeze.

  • Invest in a smart thermostat

A smart thermostat can help you take control of your household heating, intelligently learning your lifestyle patterns and heating your home to the right temperature, as required. When connected to the internet a smart thermostat can be controlled remotely via an app on a smartphone or tablet, opening up a range of functions.

Depending on the type of smart thermostat you choose, you can access a range of special features including weather forecast integration (which uses the weather forecast to influence your temperature settings), and location-based heating control (which enables your smart thermostat to detect whether you’re at home – adjusting the temperature accordingly).

By only heating your property when needed, a smart thermostat can give you greater control over your heating, saving you money on your energy bills and even helping to reduce your carbon footprint by using less energy.

  • Have an annual boiler service

An annual check-up is essential to ensure your new boiler’s running efficiently and safely. It can help to identify any underlying faults and reduce the risk of costly repairs in the long run.

During your boiler service a Gas Safe registered engineer will test your boiler controls along with the pressure settings, safety devices, flues and surrounding pipework. At the end of your service your engineer will explain their findings, along with any necessary next steps to make your boiler run more efficiently.

Depending on the type of boiler you plan to install, the manufacturer may stipulate that an annual service is required for your warranty to remain valid.
